Vice President Vance calls El-Sayed ‘evil’ in Michigan Senate race
US Vice President J.D. Vance, at a campaign event in a Detroit suburb, called Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed “evil” and endorsed his opponent, Donald Trump ally Mike Rogers, in the race for Michigan’s Senate seat. This was reported by BBC News.
Vance said that El-Sayed, in his words, seeks to “destroy” the United States and is not interested in uniting communities. The vice president also urged the Democrat not to mention his wife, Usha Vance, who practices Hinduism. This came after comments by El-Sayed that, as the BBC notes, could have meant that Vance’s late grandfather would not have accepted the US second lady.
Vance’s statements about El-Sayed
During his speech, Vance linked El-Sayed to left-wing influencer and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Piker previously said that the United States “deserved” the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington. According to the BBC, El-Sayed did not say such words and later distanced himself from Piker, although he campaigned with him during the primaries.
Vance also accused El-Sayed of associating with supporters of terrorism and said that the candidate, in his words, sympathized with the attacker rather than the children who were targeted in the attack at Temple Israel. These claims are statements by the vice president.

Democratic candidate’s response
In an interview with CNN, El-Sayed responded by accusing the Trump administration of pursuing “evil” policies. He said that evil means stripping workers of access to healthcare in exchange for tax breaks for billionaires, as well as rising food and fuel prices, trade wars and wars abroad.
The candidate explained that his comments about the Vance family were intended to demonstrate disagreement with the vice president’s political philosophy, which, according to El-Sayed, divides people into more and less American.
Michigan’s Senate election is among the most prominent in the 2026 midterm election campaign. A poll by Epic-MRA released this week showed that El-Sayed is leading Rogers by four percentage points.
