Zelenskyy emphasized the need for sanctions against Russia to achieve peace

In order for the aggressor country to choose to end the war, international sanctions pressure must remain unwavering.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement during a joint briefing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin. The head of state emphasized that only a tangible signal through sanctions will compel the Russian leadership to heed calls for peace.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Germany for supporting Ukraine’s efforts and stressed that, alongside pressure on the aggressor, partners must provide the Armed Forces with all necessary assistance. According to him, the combination of sanctions and military support is a key factor in ending hostilities. Only in this way will Russia feel the inevitability of the consequences of its ongoing aggression.

During the meeting, the leaders also discussed strengthening economic isolation of Moscow amid reports that the Russian economy has entered a systemic recession based on first-quarter 2026 results. Ukraine insists that any easing of sanctions before the full restoration of territorial integrity is unacceptable. The German side confirmed its readiness to maintain a tough stance toward the Kremlin within the framework of the joint strategy of the EU and the G7.
