The meeting between King Charles III of the United Kingdom and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington will take place behind closed doors. This decision was prompted by concerns that a public conflict similar to the one that occurred during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House might recur.

This was reported by The Guardian.

According to the report, it was the British side that insisted on restricting press access during the talks in the Oval Office.

“It was British officials who insisted on a closed-door meeting in the Oval Office,” the report states.

According to the agreements, journalists will be allowed to attend only at the beginning of the meeting for protocol photos, after which the press will be asked to leave the room.

The decision is explained by a desire to avoid a repeat of situations involving sharp public criticism during diplomatic contacts.

During the king’s visit, he will be accompanied by representatives of the British royal family and British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper. According to sources, she is prepared to respond promptly to any tense moments that may arise during the talks.

“She is ready to step in as a human shield for the king if Trump starts criticizing Starmer or the UK in general,” one source noted.

At the same time, other sources are confident that Charles III will be able to handle the situation on his own thanks to his many years of diplomatic experience.

The visit’s agenda includes a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office and an address to the U.S. Congress. The king is expected to raise the topics of the environment and support for Ukraine, though in a restrained, diplomatic manner.

Donald Trump himself spoke positively about the upcoming visit the day before, calling Charles III a “fantastic person” and a “courageous representative of Great Britain.”

The British side hopes that personal dialogue at the highest level will help stabilize relations between the countries, which have remained tense in recent times.
