Nicolas Cage changed his name and explained his decision
The American actor spoke about his personal reasons for the change. Nicolas Cage announced that he had officially changed his name, explaining that he did so out of a desire for a more personal and family-oriented sense of identity. According to him, the decision stems from a reevaluation of his own identity and his role within the family.
He spoke about this in an interview with Variety.
Nicolas Cage is the actor’s stage name. His real name is Nicolas Kim Coppola. He is the nephew of renowned director Francis Ford Coppola.
According to the actor himself, he officially changed his name last year.
“In life, I’m Nick Cage, and in front of the camera, I’m Nick Cage too. It’s better to be the head of my own little family than a clownish cousin on the sidelines of someone else’s, so I decided: I’ll be ‘Cage,’” the actor explained.
He also shared why he chose the surname Cage at the start of his career.
“Cage is a name I liked seeing in comic books—I just thought it was a cool name—and I also grew up in a very avant-garde, creative family where John Cage and his experimental compositions were often mentioned. I was looking for something like ‘James Dean’; I wanted something short and pleasant. I thought, ‘Well, I’ll keep the name Nicholas,’ because my father named me Nicholas…,” he added.
