China's Maoming Sets Record for Fresh Lychee Exports

The city of Maoming in China’s Guangdong Province has wrapped up the fresh lychee export season: customs officials cleared the final shipment of fruit and sent it to the United States. According to Maoming customs, the city exported 8,450 metric tons of lychees during the season, worth 177 million yuan, or about $24.7 million.

The volume of shipments increased by 3.3% compared to the previous year, and their value rose by 52.6%. Both figures set new records, even though this year was a less productive one in the lychee production cycle.

Maoming is known as China’s “lychee capital”: it is the country’s largest lychee-growing region. Lychees have been cultivated here for over 2,000 years. The city’s orchard area totals approximately 1.45 million mu, or 96,667 hectares. Maoming has also developed a large-scale, industrialized, and diversified lychee cultivation industry.
