In the U.S., Jewish artists are being blacklisted — Jerusalem Post

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has released a series of studies in which it highlights the systematic exclusion and marginalization of Jewish and Israeli artists in museums, the publishing sector, and live performance venues in the United States. The initiative is titled “State of the Arts: Advancing Jewish Inclusion in Arts, Entertainment, and Culture,” according to the Jerusalem Post.

ADL Executive Director Jonathan Greenblatt stated that, according to the organization’s assessment, Jewish artists are being canceled, blacklisted, and pushed out of American cultural life. The ADL also published a separate study on networks of activists who, it claims, are pressuring cultural institutions through protests, boycotts, and blacklists.

Assessment of Museums

In the report *Behind the Frame: A Quiet, Systemic Erasure in America’s Museums*, the ADL assessed the policies, artist representation, and programs of 40 leading art museums in the United States. Of the 40 institutions invited to participate in the assessment, 20 took part. Only the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive received the highest rating, while 12 museums were deemed “critically deficient,” including the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Broad.

According to the ADL, none of the 40 museums included Jewish identity in their commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Only one museum observed Jewish American Heritage Month in May 2026, while 60% of institutions continued to observe other cultural heritage months.

Publishing and Speeches

In its study of the publishing industry, *Missing Chapter: Suppression of Jewish Voices in Publishing, based on more than 30 interviews with authors and industry experts, the ADL described seven anti-Jewish trends that, in its assessment, have been reshaping the industry since October 7, 2023. Among them is pressure on authors to remove Hebrew words, Israeli locations, and character names that sound Jewish from their manuscripts. The report also mentions boycotts of authors on BookTok, Bookstagram, and X, as well as coordinated negative reviews of books on Goodreads prior to their release.

The report, “Dark Stage: Jewish and Israeli Performers Are Being Canceled, Harassed, and Silenced,” documented 65 incidents across 41 locations in the U.S. involving obstacles faced by Jewish, Israeli, and openly Zionist performers. The ADL states that some venues canceled performances due to anticipated protests or risks of disorder, while artists faced boycotts, protests, and insults during concerts and shows.

In a survey of 951 American adults conducted in July 2026, 85% of respondents agreed that excluding Jews or their works from cultural spaces contributes to anti-Jewish hatred; regarding the exclusion of Israelis, 72% responded in the same way. The ADL called on museums, publishers, literary agents, and concert venues to explicitly address antisemitism in their policies and to counter campaigns based on exclusion based on identity.
