A man opened fire near the pyramids at Teotihuacan; there are injuries and one fatality
A shooting occurred in Mexico at the Teotihuacan archaeological site, located about 50 kilometers from Mexico City. The incident took place on April 20 near the Pyramid of the Moon—one of the country’s main tourist attractions.
This was reported by Reuters, citing a police statement.
According to eyewitnesses and police, a 27-year-old man climbed to the top of the pyramid and opened fire indiscriminately, shouting incomprehensible phrases. He was also holding a tablet in his hands.
After the shooting, the man took his own life. He was identified as Julio César Hasso Ramírez, a resident of Mexico City.
A Canadian citizen was killed in the incident, and 13 foreigners were injured, including a child.
Among the victims are citizens of the United States, Colombia, Brazil, Canada, and Russia. The Russian citizen is in the hospital in stable condition.
Near the man’s body, law enforcement officers found a photo frame containing an image created using artificial intelligence, in which he was depicted alongside the Columbine High School attackers.
Teotihuacan is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, visited by millions of people every year. Despite the country’s overall crime situation, such incidents in tourist areas are rare.
It is expected that following the tragedy, Mexican authorities will tighten security measures at key cultural and tourist sites.
Earlier in Turkey, a shooting occurred at a high school in the province of Şanlıurfa, leaving at least 16 people injured.
At a school in the Leninsky District of Chelyabinsk, a ninth-grader carried out an attack using a signal pistol.
The suspect in the shooting near the Anapa Industrial Technical School is 17-year-old student Ilya O., according to the Telegram channels “Ostorozhno, Novosti,” “VChK-OGPU,” and Baza.
