Denmark to Deploy a Battalion to Latvia – Reuters

Denmark plans to deploy a military battalion of 850 soldiers to Latvia this fall to replace the Swedish contingent stationed there. This decision was made as part of the Alliance’s collective efforts to strengthen security along the borders with the aggressor country. 

The head of the Danish Defense Ministry, Jeppe Bruus Christensen, emphasized during a conversation with journalists following a closed-door briefing for parliamentarians that it is extremely important for his country to play an active role in deterring Russia due to the serious escalation of the current security situation.

 The intensification of European efforts and the assumption of greater responsibility for their own regional security are taking place against the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions and criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, who previously accused European NATO allies of failing to provide sufficient support to Washington in the armed conflict with Iran and announced a partial withdrawal of U.S. troops from Germany.
