BBC Experts Offer Tips on How to Protect Yourself from AI Scams – BBC News

Scammers use artificial intelligence to create realistic imitations of loved ones’ voices and call victims with messages about alleged emergencies and an urgent need for money. But there’s an easy way to prevent this.

The main advice from experts is to agree on a secret code word or password with your family. To do this, they recommend choosing a phrase or a family inside joke that’s easy to remember but hard for an outsider to guess.

You should use the password in alarming situations, such as when someone asks for an urgent money transfer or reports an accident. Experts advise regularly reminding your family of the code word and changing it periodically.

Signs of fraud include demands to act immediately, requests to transfer money via Bitcoin, gift cards, or cash, as well as instructions not to contact others to verify the information. Experts urge people not to rely on a voice as the sole proof of identity, to prepare mentally in advance, and to remain calm. Before complying with the caller’s demands, it is essential to verify the information with other relatives or acquaintances.
