European Council President António Costa stated that following the approval of financial aid and sanctions against Russia, the European Union should move on to the next stage—opening accession negotiations with Ukraine.
He made these remarks during a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Costa emphasized that the next step should be the opening of the first negotiation cluster regarding Ukraine’s EU membership.
Meanwhile, von der Leyen announced that Ukraine could receive the first tranche of financial aid as early as this quarter. According to her, one-third of the funds will go toward budgetary needs, and the rest will go to the defense sector, specifically to the development of drone production.
Zelenskyy thanked EU countries for their support, emphasizing that the €90 billion will help strengthen defense, develop weapons production, and ensure energy stability.
He also noted that Ukraine will continue to work with partners to compel Russia to return to a diplomatic resolution of the war.
Earlier, the European Union unanimously approved a €90 billion loan for Ukraine and adopted the 20th package of sanctions against Russia.
Ukraine may receive a clear roadmap for EU accession in May.
Additionally, Ukraine has received invitations from Asian countries, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced new visits and agreements.
