Lufthansa is introducing new baggage allowance rules for its base fare

Lufthansa and other carriers in the group are changing their carry-on baggage policies, allowing passengers to bring only one small personal item on board free of charge. The new rules will apply to short- and medium-haul flights operated by SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines to better meet the needs of passengers traveling short distances.

Tagesschau reports on this.

According to the updated fare, the dimensions of the free item must not exceed 40×30×15 cm, which corresponds to the size of a laptop bag or small backpack. Ticket sales under these conditions will begin on April 28, and flights under the new rules will start on May 19. Passengers will have to pay an additional fee starting at 15 euros for any extra carry-on or checked baggage.

The airline giant’s strategy shift reflects a global trend toward lowering the cost of base fares by excluding additional services from the price. While Russia remains subject to aviation sanctions, leading European carriers are optimizing their logistics and pricing. Lufthansa explains this move as a desire to provide customers with greater flexibility in choosing the necessary options. Passengers are advised to carefully review the fare conditions when booking after the changes take effect.

Germany’s largest airline, Lufthansa, has announced a major reduction in its flight schedule for the period from May to October.

Europe has approximately six weeks’ worth of aviation fuel reserves remaining.
