Madyar is ready to meet with Zelenskyy next week, but there is a condition

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has stated his willingness to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy early next week. The main condition for holding this high-level meeting is the final resolution of the issue regarding the fundamental rights of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine.

The head of the Hungarian government made this announcement in Berlin during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Currently, active bilateral negotiations are underway between the two countries at the technical level regarding the guarantee of educational, linguistic, and cultural rights for the Hungarian community, particularly in Transcarpathia. According to Péter Magyar, this dialogue is currently progressing very encouragingly and showing positive progress, which gives reason to hope for a successful conclusion of the technical part of the consultations by the end of this week.

The Hungarian prime minister emphasized that ensuring the fundamental rights of national minorities is a prerequisite for a country seeking to begin negotiations on accession to the European Union, and expressed considerable optimism regarding the possibility of resolving this long-standing dispute and opening a completely new chapter in Ukrainian-Hungarian relations.

This was reported by Ukrinform.

Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, made high-profile statements regarding the situation of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine and the European Union’s future economic relations with the Russian Federation.

The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sibiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During the talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.

Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was struck. Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that it was preparing urgent countermeasures.
