Melnik criticized the UN Security Council for its inaction regarding Ukraine
Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the UN Security Council’s inability to effectively counter Russia’s actions is a disgrace.
The diplomat called on international partners to provide Ukraine with all available interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems.
“It is a disgrace that, to this day, the UN Security Council has failed to take effective measures to hold Russia accountable and prevent the daily genocide of the Ukrainian people, which is taking place before the eyes of the entire world,” Melnik said.
The diplomat noted that Russia has deliberately intensified its campaign of ballistic terror against Ukraine, exploiting the critical shortage of interceptor missiles for Ukraine’s air defense.
“Knowing that Ukraine faces a critical shortage of interceptor missiles for its air defense, Putin has unleashed the most cynical and brutal campaign of ballistic terror in modern human history, deliberately targeting ordinary people throughout Ukraine,” he stated.
Melnik called the situation “the most horrific and repulsive theater of the absurd in history.” According to him, Ukraine remains under constant attack from Russian drones and ballistic missiles, while the international community has largely limited itself to condemning Russia’s crimes.
“And all the international community seems capable of doing is to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council and, at best, condemn the war crimes and crimes against humanity that Russia is committing on a massive scale,” the Ukrainian Permanent Representative emphasized.
The diplomat stressed that condemning Russian aggression alone is not enough to stop ballistic missile strikes. He therefore called on the international community to take concrete action.
Among the proposed steps:
- imposing the most severe and far-reaching sanctions against Russia, particularly targeting companies that manufacture lethal weapons;
- putting an end to Russia’s abuse of its veto power in the UN Security Council, which, according to Melnik, allows Moscow to evade responsibility;
- transfer to Ukraine all available interceptor missiles held by partner countries.
Melnik also announced that Ukraine is initiating the creation of a global coalition to ramp up the production of interceptor missiles.
According to him, this is a long-term program designed to last 10 years or more.
The diplomat emphasized that increasing missile production will not only help protect the lives of Ukrainians right now but will also be an important step toward deterring and preventing future missile attacks.
Melnik made these remarks during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
Russia is already losing the war it started against Ukraine, and its economy and military capabilities are gradually being depleted due to the costs of its aggression, sanctions, and Ukrainian strikes.
Dan Negrea, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the UN, called on Russia and Ukraine to cease strikes that harm civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to return to negotiations.
