The British Defense Minister has resigned over disagreements regarding defense spending

British Defense Minister John Giley officially resigned on Thursday due to his strong disagreement with the government’s plans for defense spending, which he said do not reflect the current level of threats.

The official stated that the proposed funding undermines the country’s combat readiness and jeopardizes the security of the armed forces.

In his official letter, the head of the Defense Ministry openly accused the prime minister and financial authorities of derailing key security programs.

John Healey directly stated that Starmer and the Treasury failed to allocate the necessary funds for the country’s Defense Investment Plan, which was intended to bring the British armed forces to a state of “combat readiness.”

According to the official, the neglect of the military’s financial needs is occurring against the backdrop of a rapidly deteriorating geopolitical situation worldwide.

The former minister detailed the key security challenges that currently require London to concentrate its resources to the maximum and strengthen its military capabilities.

“The conflict in the Middle East, where the UK currently leads a multinational military mission in the Strait of Hormuz; security in the Far North, where the UK currently leads NATO’s ‘Arctic Watch’ mission; Russia’s increased activity toward the UK and NATO countries and intensified attacks in Ukraine, taking into account the Paris Agreement, which confirms the deployment of British troops in Ukraine following the ceasefire,” Gili emphasized.

The official stressed that the executive branch has shown weakness in protecting national interests in the face of global military threats.

“You were unable, and the Ministry of Finance was unwilling, to allocate the resources necessary for the country to defend itself at this time of growing threats,” Gili wrote in a letter to Starmer.

Another contentious issue was the establishment of a clear defense spending target of 3% of GDP by 2030 as part of commitments to the Alliance, especially given the Prime Minister’s own warning about the risk of a Russian attack on NATO.

In conclusion, John Gilley stated that he has no intention of taking responsibility for the artificial weakening of the British Army and the deliberate reduction of its capabilities on the international stage.

“You know what defense needs…Without a defense budget that meets today’s requirements, I am forced to make decisions that will reduce the combat readiness of our Armed Forces, increase the risk to personnel during operations, and may make the country less safe,” the official stated.

He concluded: “Having made it clear to you that I cannot agree to a defense budget deal that does not provide our armed forces with the necessary resources, I have no choice but to resign as Minister of Defense.”

This is stated in the minister’s letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which John Healey published on the X platform.
