Moldova may declare a state of emergency in the energy sector due to Russia's attacks on Ukraine

On March 24, Moldova may declare a 60-day state of emergency in the energy sector amid Russia’s massive attacks on Ukraine’s power grid.

This was announced by the country’s Prime Minister, Alexandru Munteanu.

According to him, the nighttime attacks led to the shutdown of the key Vulcanesti–Isaccha power line, which supplies Moldova with electricity. Despite the connection of four inter-state lines with Romania, the situation remains difficult.

“This is not a measure of panic, but a measure of responsibility,” Munteanu emphasized, explaining that the state of emergency will allow for faster mobilization of resources and protection of critical infrastructure.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that the attacks on the energy sector constitute a war crime by Russia and affect not only Ukraine but also other countries in the region.

She noted that the attacks have severed Moldova’s vital energy link with Europe, and that Russia bears full responsibility for the situation.

As a reminder, Moldova is implementing a state of heightened readiness in the energy sector due to the situation in the Middle East.

Additionally, following the Russian attack, technical oils in the Dniester River have reached Moldova.
