Poland is investigating the death of one of its citizens in a Russian detention center, which is believed to have resulted from torture

The Polish prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into the death of Polish citizen Krzysztof Halos, who died in a Russian detention center.

This was reported by Gazeta Wyborcza.

The investigation is considering the possibility that his death resulted from unlawful detention, torture, and the infliction of serious bodily harm. The case may also be classified as a war crime.

Previously, the Russian side stated that Halos died in the Taganrog detention center due to “cardiomyopathy of unknown etiology,” which allegedly caused brain and lung edema and heart failure.

At the same time, Polish investigators question these conclusions. A forensic medical expert noted that such formulations do not provide a clear answer regarding the actual cause of death and can be found in various cases.

According to Russian authorities, the man was detained for “obstructing a special military operation,” that is, due to his stance on the war against Ukraine.

The Polish side insists on establishing the true circumstances of the death and does not rule out the involvement of Russian officials in the crime.

Russian authorities have officially confirmed for the first time the death of Polish citizen Krzysztof Halos, who was detained following a trip to Ukraine. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the man was detained in Melitopol for allegedly “opposing the special military operation,” after which he was transferred to a pretrial detention center in Taganrog, where he died on July 4, 2023.
