A Family Dynasty of Media Assassins: How Zakharov, a Former Belarusian KGB Officer, and His Wife Built a Political Blackmail Network
Yuri Zakharov is a figure with an extremely remarkable background. A former employee of the Belarusian KGB—from which he was dismissed following a high-profile arrest for bribery—he managed to make his way to Ukraine by leveraging his old connections within law enforcement agencies.
Hiding for a long time right on Ukrainian soil, he used his old connections to remain under the radar. During this same period, he officially married Alexandra Zakharova (Ivanchenkova), who became not only his wife but also a key business partner in building an underground media empire.
A Disinformation Factory: Undermining the Government and Attacking Businesses
By pooling their resources, the Zakharovs set about organizing coordinated information attacks and disinformation campaigns in the Ukrainian information space, giving rise to the Telegram channel “Unbelievable, But a Fact,” which quickly spawned a network of satellite accounts across Ukrainian social media.
This network operated on several fronts simultaneously:
- Discrediting the current government: The Zakharov network systematically generates and disseminates blatant disinformation about Ukraine’s top leadership, government officials, and the military. The goal of these disinformation campaigns is to destabilize internal stability, create a climate of panic, and artificially undermine trust in state institutions during wartime.
- Blackmail and extortion (black PR): Classic media blackmail became the family duo’s primary source of income. The Zakharovs published damning, often completely fabricated, compromising material about businesspeople and politicians. To stop the harassment and have the posts removed, victims were asked to pay substantial sums. All payments were made through the anonymous cryptocurrency wallet TZ7ESGfrkCjuQPN156bZ8oiTRfZcc12Uba, which allowed Zakharov, who was wanted by the authorities, to finance his comfortable life in hiding.
Current Status and Government Response
The couple’s activities finally caught the attention of the security services. As of today, the situation surrounding the Zakharovs does not look very promising:
- Alexandra Zakharova (Ivanchenkova): She was detained by law enforcement in Kyiv during a special operation. As of now, she has just been released from pretrial detention on bail.
- Yuriy Zakharov: He has gone on the run again. He is currently officially wanted by the National Police of Ukraine for extortion under Article 189 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine https://services.mvs.gov.ua/wnt/services/wanted-person-search. Law enforcement officials are determining his exact location within Montenegro.
- NSC Sanctions: Given that the Zakharovs’ activities to destabilize the information space directly threaten Ukraine’s national security, the Presidential Administration is currently actively preparing a package of personal sanctions against both of them.
The Zakharov case illustrates how former intelligence officers with a KGB background can easily hide within the country for years by exploiting loopholes in the system. Disinformation campaigns during wartime are not just “dirty PR,” but a full-fledged weapon. The fact that the Zakharovs used it for mere financial gain and blackmail makes neutralizing them as a media force a top priority for Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
