US officially withdraws from WHO with $260 million debt

The United States formally completed its withdrawal from the World Health Organization while still owing $260 million, according to Bloomberg.

The withdrawal process was initiated by then-president Donald Trump on the first day of his second term and finalized a year later. Despite ending its membership, the US has not settled its debt to the organization.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized UN agency focused on global public health. It coordinates international efforts on medical issues, epidemiology, and disease prevention.

Completing withdrawal while owing substantial debt may lead to diplomatic and financial repercussions for the US, weakening its influence in global health affairs. This move drew significant attention amid the ongoing global pandemic.

Further collaboration between the US and WHO will depend on political decisions made by future administrations and international health priorities.
