The U.S. Department of State has approved the potential sale of equipment for the Hawk air defense missile system to Ukraine. According to a State Department statement, the total value of the package is estimated at $108.1 million. Officials in Washington note that the deal is intended to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to counter current and future air threats.
Reportedly, the Ukrainian government has requested that Washington:
- the purchase of prefabricated mast trailers;
- overhaul and maintenance;
- spare parts, consumables, and components, as well as repair and return services;
- engineering and technical support from the U.S. government and contractors;
- other related elements of logistical and program support for the FrankenSAM Hawk air defense system.
“The proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a partner country that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe,” the statement reads.
The U.S. State Department noted that the sale will improve Ukraine’s capabilities to counter current and future threats, noting that the Ukrainian side will have no trouble integrating these goods and services into its armed forces.
