Polish tennis player Maia Hwaliska’s victory in the Roland Garros semifinals drew a reaction not only from sports fans but also from the country’s political leadership, as Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reacted to her triumph with maximum emotion and without diplomatic subtleties.
In his post on social media platform X, he briefly congratulated the athlete and made a statement that immediately went viral and sparked a wide response among social media users. “Our Maya the Bee is better than Russian missiles!” Tusk wrote, highlighting his compatriot’s victory in a symbolic and emotional way.
Chwalinska, who confidently defeated Russia’s Diana Schneider in the semifinals, reached the Grand Slam final for the first time in her career, and did so after advancing through qualifying, which in itself was already a historic achievement for Polish tennis.
In addition, she became the first player in the history of Roland Garros to reach the final from the qualifying draw, as well as only the second Open Era player (since 1968) to reach a major final as a qualifier—previously, this feat was achieved by Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who went on to win the 2021 US Open.
