China has launched its first 30-megawatt power plant

China has launched its first 30-megawatt power plant

In China’s Guizhou Province, the second power unit of the Carbon One project, which runs on flue gas, has been commissioned. Engineers from the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) have successfully connected the facility to the main power grid. The facility is being touted as the world’s first power plant of this scale to use such technology for converting energy from industrial emissions.

This was reported by Interesting Engineering.

Engineers launched the plant’s first generator on December 20, 2025. Since then, it has operated stably, and all of its performance metrics have fully met or exceeded design targets.

The second 15-MW unit was launched this year, on May 30, at the Shougang Shuicheng Steel Plant in Liupanshui. The plant’s total capacity now reaches 30 MW.

“With both power units now operational, the Super Carbon No. 1 will provide a stable installed capacity of 30 MW, making it the largest, most advanced, and most mature supercritical carbon dioxide power generation project currently in operation,” stated CNNC representatives.

The Carbon One project uses carbon dioxide in a supercritical state as a working fluid. Under these conditions, the substance exhibits properties of both a liquid and a gas, allowing for much more efficient energy transfer compared to conventional steam systems.

The technology was jointly developed by specialists from the CNNC Institute of Nuclear Energy together with partners Jigang International and Shougang Shuicheng. It is designed to recover excess heat in energy-intensive industrial sectors, such as metallurgy.

The plant captures heat emissions from steel production and prevents them from entering the atmosphere. The collected energy is immediately converted into electricity and fed into the local power grid.

“Long-term operation has confirmed the reliability of the project’s main equipment and the stability of the entire system under various operating conditions,” added representatives of the facility.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected Russia’s accusations regarding Ukraine’s alleged attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

As a reminder, the IAEAwarns of an increased risk of a nuclear disaster.

The ZNPP recorded its 15th blackout since the start of the occupation.

Earlier, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant resumed operations on Ukraine’s power grid after a one-and-a-half-hour interruption in external power supply.
