Former Aeroflot CEO Arrested in Moscow on Charges of Misconduct

Mikhail Poluboyarinov, former CEO of the Russian airline Aeroflot and current advisor to the head of the state corporation Rostec, has become a suspect in a criminal case and has been taken into custody.

Criminal proceedings against Poluboyarinov were initiated under the article on abuse of official authority resulting in serious consequences (Part 3 of Article 285 of the Russian Criminal Code).

According to sources, the investigation is not related to the aviation sector but concerns his previous activities at the state corporation “VEB.RF” (Vnesheconombank), where he served on the board in 2020 and worked there from 2009 to 2019. Law enforcement authorities are interested in financial transactions from 2016 related to the restructuring of a number of banking institutions. As part of the same case, in May 2026, Artem Dovlatov, the current deputy chairman of “VEB.RF,” was placed under house arrest.

Mikhail Poluboyarinov headed Aeroflot from November 2020 to April 2022 and stepped down after the European Union imposed personal sanctions against him in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev explained the dismissal at the time by stating that the manager had allegedly been unable to work effectively under “stressful conditions.” Starting in January 2023, Poluboyarinov served as an advisor to Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov, where he was responsible for the financial support of the group’s enterprises.
