Ukraine and Moldova are set to begin EU accession talks
All European Union member states have agreed to begin negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on opening the first accession chapter on the path to EU membership. This means that the process is officially moving into the practical phase, and the countries are one step closer to membership.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced that all EU member states have given the “green light” to start negotiations on opening the first cluster for Ukraine and Moldova, calling it an important and long-awaited decision. “Fantastic news,” Yulia Svyrydenko wrote. “We are one step closer to joining the EU: we are moving confidently toward our goal.”
This refers to the start of work on the first group of negotiation issues, which concerns fundamental European principles—in particular the rule of law, democracy, and the functioning of state institutions—and it is precisely with this that the formal path to EU membership usually begins.
In her post, Svyrydenko thanked the Cypriot EU Presidency and all member states for supporting the decision and moving forward in unison.

Cyprus, which currently holds the EU presidency, initiated preparations for the official launch of negotiations, and this decision is considered a major milestone for Ukraine and Moldova on the path to European integration, as it effectively opens a new phase of political and legal rapprochement with the EU. This was reported by Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.
The European Commission announced plans to allocate up to 641 million euros for the development and support of Moldova’s economy. This was stated by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during her visit to Chisinau.
