India responded sharply to Trump following his offensive remarks
US President Donald Trump has faced harsh criticism in India following a post in which he called the country a “hellhole.”
In response to Trump’s statement, Indian society and the media emphasized that, given his privileged background, he may not fully understand the realities and difficulties faced by immigrants.
This was reported with reference to The Guardian.
On Wednesday, April 22, Trump posted a transcript of remarks by conservative podcast host Michael Savage on his social media platform Truth Social. The document condemned the U.S. constitutional right to citizenship for anyone born in the country.
The post accused Indian immigrants in the tech industry of not hiring white Americans born in the country. It also falsely claimed that immigrants from India have poor English skills.
"A child here immediately receives citizenship, and then they bring the whole family here from China, India, or some other hellhole on this planet," Trump’s post reads.
Trump is adding fuel to the "fire of hatred"
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that these remarks were baseless and inappropriate.
"These remarks are clearly baseless and inappropriate. They certainly do not reflect the reality of Indo-American relations, which have long been based on mutual respect and shared interests," he emphasized.
Congressman Ami Bera, a Democrat whose parents are Indian immigrants, called Trump’s post “offensive, uneducated, and unworthy of the office he holds.”
"President Trump, who was born into a wealthy and privileged family, has never had to face the hardships that many immigrant families face," he emphasized.
The Hindu American Foundation, a civil rights organization, stated that it was alarmed by this “hateful, racist tirade.”
"The U.S. president’s endorsement of such remarks will only add fuel to the fire of hatred and endanger our communities at a time when xenophobia and racism have already reached unprecedented levels," the organization said in a statement.
