The first results of the parliamentary elections have been released in Hungary

The first results of the parliamentary elections in Hungary are in. According to preliminary data, with 6.56% of ballots counted, the opposition party “Tisa” is taking the lead in terms of the number of seats.

This was reported by the National Election Office of Hungary.

The situation in parliament (199 seats in total) is as follows:

  • "Tisza" (Péter Magyar) — is projected to win 110 seats, giving it a majority but not a constitutional one (130).

  • “Fidesz” (Viktor Orbán) — currently in second place with 71 seats.

  • “Our Homeland” — is projected to win 9 seats.

At the same time, data on voting strictly by party lists (with 2.86% of votes counted) differs slightly: here, Fidesz leads with 48%, while Tisa has 43%.

Experts note that this discrepancy between the percentage of votes for party lists and the number of seats is due to the specifics of the majority system in certain districts, where the opposition is currently showing strong results. Since the count has only just begun, these figures are preliminary and may change significantly overnight, especially after data from major cities and Budapest is processed. The country is awaiting official results, which could bring an end to Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule.

As a reminder, in Hungary, the opposition has a chance to defeat Orbán for the first time in many years.

The opposition party “Tisa” has a chance to win two-thirds of the seats in the Hungarian parliament in the April 12 elections, which would allow it to amend the constitution and key laws.
