Ukraine may test the European Freya air defense system as an alternative to the Patriot

Tests of the new European air defense system, Freya—which is described as a more affordable alternative to the American Patriot system—may begin in Ukraine in the near future.

This was reported with reference to a broadcast by MP Oleksiy Honcharenko.

Denis Shtilerman, co-founder of Firepoint, also noted this. According to him, a Ukrainian company is involved in the project’s development, and testing of the system in Ukraine could take place by the end of the year.

Ukraine is participating in the development of a new air defense system

The Ukrainian company Firepoint is participating in the international Freya project, which aims to create a modern air defense system for intercepting ballistic missiles.

According to the company’s co-founder, Denis Shterman, the developers expect to conduct the first tests of the system by the end of this year.

What is known about the Freya project

The Freya project is being developed as a more affordable alternative to the American Patriot system. The main task of the new system is to destroy ballistic targets.

Currently, such capabilities are primarily possessed by the Patriot, which is considered one of the most effective air defense systems for countering ballistic missiles.

According to Stilerman, Ukraine’s participation in the development allows for the application of practical experience gained during a full-scale war.

Why this is important for Ukraine

In recent years, Russia has regularly used ballistic missiles to strike Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Therefore, strengthening air defense remains a key priority for the country’s security.

The development of new air defense systems and cooperation with European partners can help Ukraine obtain additional means of protection against missile attacks and reduce its dependence on expensive foreign systems.

Latvia will strengthen its air defense with new radars selected on Ukraine’s advice.

On the morning of May 23, another drone incursion was recorded in Latvia. Prior to this, air raid alerts due to UAVs had been declared in the country almost every day this week.

According to The Telegraph, Russia has allegedly learned to intercept and “redirect” Ukrainian drones, forcing them to fly toward NATO countries. Due to massive electronic warfare attacks, the drones lose their bearings and begin to veer off course.
