Vatican Prepares for Historic Climate Crisis Address — The New York Times

There is a particular secluded garden at the Vatican’s summer residence, the Papal Palace of Castel Gandolfo, where past popes have gone to ponder weighty issues and pray for God’s guidance. It is there that the newly elected Pope Leo XIV will deliver his first major address on climate.

He has already spoken briefly on the subject a few weeks ago, saying: “Grave inequalities and the greed that fuel deforestation, pollution, and the loss of biodiversity are driving disaster. Extreme natural phenomena caused by human activity are growing in intensity and frequency.”

His remarks on Wednesday are expected to be his fullest yet on climate change, timed to mark the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si, Pope Francis’s groundbreaking encyclical that reframed the Catholic Church’s teachings to directly address climate change.
