Volyn was shaken by the murder of a missing woman; the suspect has already been detained
In Volyn, the body of a 67-year-old woman who had gone missing back in May and had been considered missing for over a month was found, and investigators have now determined that she was murdered. Police have arrested a 36-year-old repeat offender from a neighboring village who is suspected of the crime.
The story of the disappearance of the 67-year-old resident of the Kovel District, which had kept the entire region on edge for nearly a month, ended tragically: the woman was found dead, and law enforcement officials confirmed that her death was violent and announced the arrest of a suspect.
The search began on May 17, when her family contacted the police after the woman stopped responding to calls. Nearly a hundred people were involved in the operation, including police officers, National Guard troops, and rescue workers, who combed through forests, bodies of water, and the outskirts of villages using search dogs and drones; however, the first leads did not emerge until early June.
It was then that a police dog discovered the missing woman’s personal belongings and, later, her body in a drainage canal between two settlements, after which a forensic examination confirmed that her death was violent, immediately reclassifying the case as a particularly serious crime. Law enforcement officers gradually investigated the victim’s contacts, examined possible scenarios, and interviewed witnesses, and as a result, they identified a 36-year-old man from a neighboring village who had already been convicted multiple times for serious crimes, including violence and robbery.
According to police, after allegedly committing the crime, he attempted to flee the region and went into hiding; however, he was apprehended and charged with intentional homicide, which carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The court has already ordered him to be held in pretrial detention, and investigators are continuing their work and ordering forensic examinations to reconstruct the full sequence of events and establish all the circumstances of the case.
