Zelenskyy explained why Trump is not a sufficient guarantee of security for Ukraine
The assumption that Russia will refrain from a new offensive out of fear of U.S. President Donald Trump cannot serve as a sufficient guarantee of peace. The lack of a tangible international presence on the front lines leaves the question of deterring the aggressor unresolved.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated this in an interview with ICTV.
Zelenskyy emphasized that without the presence of allies on the contact line, Russia would have no reason not to launch a new offensive after a certain period of time. He noted that he sees no factors that could restrain Russia under such conditions.
“What security guarantees are being given to Ukraine? If our partners are not present on the contact line, then why wouldn’t the Russians launch another offensive after some time? Why? I simply don’t understand why. I don’t see any reasons. What will restrain them? What?” Zelenskyy emphasized.
The president also raised the issue of the time limits of such a policy, noting that Trump’s term will last another two and a half years, and further steps remain unclear. Ukraine, on the other hand, demands real and lasting security guarantees.
“For example, the U.S. says—President Trump. President Trump has two and a half years left, but what will we do after that?” the Ukrainian leader concluded.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about work on a new package of security guarantees for Ukraine. According to him, to prevent future aggression by Russia, not only modern air defense systems are important, but also the possible deployment of allied military forces on Ukrainian territory.
Italy has proposed including security guarantees for Kyiv in the peace plan for Ukraine, analogous to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
