Poland Tightens Penalties for Drunk Drivers – RMF FM

Starting next week, new rules will take effect in Poland that impose stricter penalties on drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The changes are intended to increase the penalties for driving under the influence of prohibited substances.

Starting June 24, amendments to the law regarding mandatory rehabilitation courses—which drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol are required to complete—will take effect.

Until now, the cost of such a mandatory course was 500 zlotys (118 euros), but after the changes, it will be 2,500 zlotys (590 euros).

The changes to these provisions were announced in a resolution by the Minister of Health. The document, in particular, specifies the program for retraining courses, a sample certificate of completion, and the rules for referring drivers for medical and psychological examinations.

In explaining the introduction of these changes, the Ministry of Health argues that “the current fee no longer corresponds to the actual costs of organizing such courses, and at the same time does not sufficiently serve a preventive function.”

In addition, the changes require drivers who have driven a vehicle while intoxicated to undergo medical and psychological examinations. After receiving an order to undergo such examinations, they have one month to comply, according to RMF FM.
