Ferrari and BMW are switching to less expensive aluminum wiring

Ferrari and BMW have started using aluminum wiring instead of copper to reduce production costs and vehicle weight.

Ferrari stated that in its hybrid models and its first electric car, the Luce, this has reduced the weight of the wiring by 20%. BMW has been using aluminum cables since 2011 and is now actively implementing them in new models.

Analysts predict that due to automakers’ switch to aluminum, demand for copper will decline by about 2% this year and by up to 6% by 2030.

Despite its lower price, aluminum is less electrically conductive than copper, so more material is needed to carry the same current.
