Three Chinese electric vehicles receive five stars from Euro NCAP

Geely electric vehicle, Leapmotor B05 and Aion UT electric vehicles received the maximum five-star rating in a new round of Euro NCAP crash tests. Meanwhile, the Cupra Raval, a model of Volkswagen Group’s Cupra brand, received four stars. InsideEVs reported the test results.

Test results

Euro NCAP assesses not only a vehicle’s behavior during a collision, but also accident-avoidance systems. According to the publication, the base-version Cupra Raval lacks some of the features installed as standard on the three Chinese electric vehicles. These include a forward collision warning system and adaptive cruise control.

If an optional safety systems package is installed, the Cupra Raval’s overall result could rise to five stars. Euro NCAP noted that the vehicle demonstrates good performance with this package.

Accident-avoidance systems

In the assessment of accident-avoidance systems, the Aion UT scored 74%, the Leapmotor B05 scored 77%, while the base Cupra Raval received 72%. The Geely electric vehicle matched the Cupra Raval equipped with the additional safety package in this part of the assessment.

At the same time, Euro NCAP raised concerns about the Aion UT and Leapmotor B05 due to the significant dependence on the touchscreen for controlling vehicle functions. In the safe-driving category, which takes into account driver and passenger monitoring systems as well as the ease of using functions while driving, both models scored 66%.

The Geely electric vehicle received 79% in this category. According to InsideEVs, the better result was aided by the presence of more physical buttons for key functions.
