Work is continuing to dry out the Assumption Cathedral following the Russian attack that took place on June 15. A large amount of water entered the cathedral while the fire was being extinguished, so experts are now doing everything possible to preserve the walls, paintings, iconostasis, and other historical elements.

Although several weeks have passed since the strike, moisture still remains in the cathedral’s walls, ancient paintings, iconostasis, and other interior elements. That is why specialized equipment is in operation at the cathedral every day.
The work involves the use of heat guns from the State Emergency Service, dehumidifiers, fans, and other equipment. The equipment was provided by the non-governmental organization “Center for Assistance to the Arts of Ukraine—Kyiv” with the support of international partners from the Ukraine Art Aid Center. Cathedral officials thanked the organization’s director, Iryna Nikiforova, for her help in preserving the historic site.
A stable power supply also plays a crucial role in the work. DTEK has set up a temporary power supply system on the first and second floors of the cathedral. Thanks to this, the heat guns, fans, and dehumidifiers can operate continuously. Specialists monitor humidity levels daily and keep an eye on the condition of the cathedral’s structural elements and interior finishes.
“The equipment will remain in operation until humidity levels stabilize,” cathedral officials said. Special attention is being paid to preserving the cathedral’s historic interior elements, particularly the historic stone slabs, paintings, and iconostasis, which are especially sensitive to excessive moisture. Work continues daily, as the preservation of this unique historic site—which was damaged by the Russian attack—depends on the speed and quality of the dehumidification process. This was reported by the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve.
Preparatory work is underway at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to conserve the roof of the Cathedral of the Dormition in order to protect the monument from winter precipitation following the damage caused by Russian shelling.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve partially resumed welcoming visitors on June 19 after several days of emergency rescue and disaster prevention work.
