Estonia selects “Meie Erika” as its contender for the 2027 Oscars
Estonia has selected director German Golub’s debut feature film “Meie Erika” (“Our Erika”) as its national contender for the 2027 Oscars in the Best International Feature Film category. The film tells the story of Estonian track cyclist and Olympic medalist Erika Salumäe.
Committee decision
As ERR News reports, the decision was made by an independent committee convened by the Estonian Film Institute. The film will be submitted in the Best International Feature Film category.
The committee described “Meie Erika” as a drama with a nostalgic mood about an important episode in Estonia’s recent history that strengthened the desire for independence. Salumäe was born in Pärnu and won Estonia’s first Olympic gold medal after the country restored its independence in 1991.

The committee also noted Karolin Jürise’s performance as the athlete building a career in the male world of Soviet sport. In the committee’s view, the story combines the themes of women’s emancipation and national self-determination.
Director’s remarks and award schedule
German Golub said that the selection was a great honor for the entire film crew. According to him, Erika Salumäe’s victories and extraordinary life journey are part of Estonia’s history, while at the heart of the sports story is the universal question of how far a person can go for a dream and love.
In 2020, Golub received a Student Academy Award in the international narrative film category for his graduation film “Mu kallid laibad” (“My Dear Corpses”). Oscar nominees will be announced on January 21, and the awards ceremony will take place on March 14 in Los Angeles.
