Harry and Meghan are set to make a film about the war in Afghanistan
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are developing a new film for Netflix that will depict real events from the war in Afghanistan. The project is based on a book by a British officer and will mark the couple’s latest collaboration with the streaming platform. For Harry, this story has a personal significance, as he himself served in Afghanistan, according to the BBC.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle continue to expand their collaboration with Netflix, this time taking on a feature film based on real events from the war in Afghanistan, adapted from the book by British Army Major Adam Jowett “No Way Out,” which describes the events of 2006 in the Musa Qala area of Helmand Province.
Their company, Archewell, is handling production, while Harry and Meghan are serving as co-producers on the project, which will tell the story of British soldiers who held their ground for an extended period under massive attacks by militants.
The plot centers on a unit that found itself in one of the most dangerous areas of Afghanistan, where their positions were regularly stormed, and soldiers were forced to hold their fortifications under constant enemy pressure, making the story one of the most intense military dramas of recent years.
For Prince Harry, this project holds personal significance, as he himself served in the British Army for ten years and was deployed twice to the war zone in Afghanistan, a fact he has emphasized on multiple occasions in his interviews. “I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there,” Harry said, commenting on his connection to the subject of the upcoming film.
The film’s screenplay is being written by British author Matt Charman, who was previously nominated for an Oscar for his work on Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies,” which lends the project additional weight from the film industry’s perspective.
This isn’t Harry and Meghan’s first joint project with Netflix—the couple is already working on several other film adaptations and series, including an adaptation of the novel “The Wedding Date” and a drama series about the world of polo, as well as documentary projects that have already been released on the platform.
At the same time, the format of their collaboration with Netflix has changed: after the previous contract expired, the parties moved to a so-called first-look deal, which stipulates that the streaming platform gets the first right to review the couple’s new ideas and projects before they go into development with other partners.
