German writer Caroline Wahl will release her fourth novel, 1999 Meter über dem Meer (“1,999 Meters Above Sea Level”), on August 28. The book tells the story of a young woman who assumes a false identity to enter the high society of Switzerland’s St. Moritz. The novel is being described as one of Germany’s most anticipated summer book releases, Deutsche Welle English reports.
Wahl, 31, has already published three novels, all of which topped German fiction bestseller lists. Her debut book, 22 Bahnen (“22 Lanes”), published in 2023, has sold more than one million copies in German-language editions. Critics praised the novel about student Tilda, who lives with her alcohol-dependent mother and younger sister, for its direct contemporary writing style.
A combination of literary styles
Literary scholar Matthias Schaffrick, a research associate at the University of Siegen, links Wahl’s popularity in part to references to contemporary pop culture and classical literature. According to him, the author experiments with and questions different ways of storytelling, leaving room for different interpretations.
Schaffrick also noted that attention is drawn not only to Wahl’s novels but also to her public image. The writer is active on Instagram, where she has, among other things, tested energy drinks. In the literary scholar’s view, this boosts her popularity but at the same time shifts public discussion from literature to the author’s personality.

Criticism and ambitions
Wahl openly speaks about her ambitions and financial success. She has said that she wants to become one of Germany’s best-known writers and has also spoken about her love of fast cars. The author drives a convertible and bought a camper van which, she says, she likes to park in places with a sea view in order to work.
On social media, Wahl was criticized for her literary depiction of poverty in 22 Bahnen because, critics claimed, she had not lived in poverty herself. In response, the writer told Deutschlandfunk that writing means exploring unfamiliar spaces and empathizing with people who have different life experiences. She also considered some of the reactions to her public accounts of material success misogynistic.
Wahl’s novels have not yet been nominated for the German Book Prize. Her debut novel 22 Bahnen was included in school curricula and adapted for the screen. The novel Die Assistentin also did not make this year’s prize longlist.
