Koo Kyo-hwan stars in Reawaken Man: The Red
Reawaken Man: The Red, starring Koo Kyo-hwan, is scheduled to be released in South Korea on September 30. As The Korea Herald reports, the film is based on the popular webtoon Reawaken Man and will mark the actor’s return to the big screen four months after his previous film.
Koo Kyo-hwan played Seok-hwan, an unemployed job seeker who does not lose his optimism. The protagonist’s life changes after he learns of his ability to return to life 72 hours after death. This supernatural power draws the attention of a mysterious organization, while his job search turns into an adventure story with action elements.
The actor’s casting
Director Baek Jong-youl said that Koo Kyo-hwan was a natural choice for the role because of his optimistic and sly disposition, which, in the director’s view, matches the main character’s personality. According to the director, during filming it was sometimes difficult to distinguish Seok-hwan from Koo Kyo-hwan himself.
The actor described his character as an ordinary young man who could be anyone’s uncle, older brother, or younger colleague. He also linked the character’s nature to the unfounded confidence that he considers inherent in people.

Adaptation and action
Baek Jong-youl said that the plot was restructured for the webtoon adaptation to account for the limited runtime of a feature film. At the same time, the creators retained the central idea of the original source: an ordinary job seeker gains an extraordinary ability.
As the protagonist repeatedly dies and returns to life, his combat abilities grow. The film combines stunt scenes and visual effects. Koo Kyo-hwan noted that he learned from the action choreography team as if it were choreography: the performers looked each other in the eyes and moved as though they were dancing.
In the first half of 2026, the actor appeared in the romantic hit Once We Were Us, which drew 2.5 million viewers, and later in director Yeon Sang-ho’s zombie thriller Colony, which had an audience of 5 million viewers.
