Lee Min-ho played a reporter in the thriller “Assassin(s)”
In South Korea, actor Lee Min-ho played Yong-gil, a young newspaper reporter, in director Hur Jin-ho’s film “Assassin(s).” The thriller, based on real events, tells the story of a newspaper editorial office in the 1970s, Korea Herald reports.
Yong-gil is the younger brother in a chaebol family who, despite his relatives’ objections, starts working at the fictional newspaper Dongsung Daily. He seeks to prove that he can succeed on his own, but uses family connections when necessary. In the film, his attractiveness also helps him obtain information from the women he interviews.
Investigation after the assassination attempt
A turning-point assignment for the protagonist is covering the Liberation Day ceremony on August 15, 1974. His editor, played by Park Hae-il, sends Yong-gil alone to what was supposed to be an ordinary ceremony. During the event, an armed man shoots at the president but kills the first lady.

After returning to the editorial office, the reporter presents a version of events that does not match the government’s position. His team decides to verify these circumstances, risking their jobs and possibly their lives. According to Korea Herald, the protagonist confronts the authoritarian regime and carries out dangerous reporting work.
The actor’s view of the role
Lee Min-ho said that at first he doubted whether viewers would accept a reporter who uses his family’s influence. In the actor’s view, the character must be convincing because he is aware of his own advantages and knows how to use them.
The actor also called Yong-gil a young man whose life had been predetermined by a wealthy family but who seeks to choose his own path. “Assassin(s)” will be released in South Korean cinemas on September 23.
