Widow’s Bay and The Pitt named Emmy favorites

Apple TV’s horror comedy Widow’s Bay and the medical drama The Pitt are considered the leading contenders for awards at the 78th Emmy Awards. The ceremony will begin on Monday at 5:00 p.m. local time, or at 12:00 a.m. GMT on Tuesday. Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing AFP.

The success of Widow’s Bay

The series Widow’s Bay, in which Matthew Rhys plays the leader of an isolated island in New England that is likely haunted by ghosts, has already won eight awards at ceremonies held before the main show. Christopher Rosen, deputy editor of the Hollywood publication The Ankler, told AFP that the project had become one of the year’s most talked-about debut series.

If the project wins several more statuettes, it could become the most awarded comedy series in a single year, surpassing the 13 awards received last year by Seth Rogen’s Hollywood satire The Studio. Rosen also predicts a victory for Rhys in the comedy acting category. In 2018, the actor won an Emmy for best male role in the drama The Americans.

In Rosen’s view, Hacks may receive only the award for best female role for Jean Smart. The actress turned 75 on Sunday and already has four Emmys for this role. If she wins, Smart will receive her eighth acting statuette and equal Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman in this respect.

Leader in drama nominations

The Pitt, which won last year as best drama series, tells the story of the staff of an emergency department in Pittsburgh, with the events of each episode unfolding in real time. The series received 25 nominations, the most of any project, and has already won four early awards, including for drama series casting.

Rosen called a possible defeat for The Pitt in the best drama series category a major surprise. He also expects another victory for lead actor Noah Wyle. Seven of his colleagues are competing for awards in supporting-role categories. For the award for best dramatic actress, Rosen believes Rhea Seehorn of Pluribus and Keri Russell of The Diplomat will compete.

Dolly Parton tribute

The ceremony will be hosted by Law and Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay. The program will include a tribute to country singer Dolly Parton, who was also an Emmy winner. Noah Kahan will perform Bridge Over Troubled Water during the In Memoriam segment. Presenters will include Sarah Michelle Gellar, David Boreanaz, Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, Jaclyn Smith and Zendaya.
