Mogwai record song Underground with Iggy Pop — Rolling Stone

Scottish post-rock band Mogwai have unveiled Underground, a collaboration with Iggy Pop. The song will appear on the Happy Tears compilation, scheduled for release on January 8, Rolling Stone reports.

A return to a long-standing collaboration

Nearly three decades ago, Mogwai used excerpts from Iggy Pop’s 1977 interview with Canada’s CBC in Punk Rock, which opened the album Come On Die Young. On the new track, Pop performs vocals over a hard rhythm and guitar sound that differs from the band’s early work.

A music video was also made for Underground, directed by Scott Macpherson. Iggy Pop said he has long loved Mogwai, and that the beginning of the song reminded him of modern loneliness. According to him, the vocal part was arranged by Matt Sweeney.

A compilation for the band’s 30th anniversary

Happy Tears is dedicated to Mogwai’s 30-year history and will bring together the band’s well-known songs and rare recordings. The release will include a new version of New Paths to Helicon 1, retitled Brand New Paths to Helicon 1 and recorded with the Budapest Art Orchestra.

The compilation will be available on two- and four-LP vinyl editions, two CDs, and digitally. Expanded editions will contain 13 additional tracks, including six previously unreleased songs. At the same time, the band will release the two-and-a-half-hour audio documentary project Happy Tears: The Story of Mogwai.
