Director James Gunn talks about singer Nouela — Rolling Stone

“Superman” director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn spoke about singer and songwriter Nouela Johnston, known as Nouela. At his birthday celebration in the Hudson Valley, he heard her perform live after she had not performed these songs for more than ten years.

As Rolling Stone reports, Gunn had listened for many years to the band People Eating People, which released one album in 2009. Among his favorite songs were All the Hospitals, For Now and Rain Rain. In 2016, the director also heard Nouela’s single Nobody and began adding her songs to his playlists.

Two projects by one artist

Earlier this year, Gunn found out that People Eating People and Nouela were two musical projects of the same artist, Nouela Johnston. According to him, together these projects did not have 100,000 followers on Spotify, while the People Eating People page had fewer than 2,000 followers.

The director noted that he did not find much information about the performer and assumed that she had not released music since 2016. He also came across a video recording of a performance of For Now in a bar, where the performance took place against the backdrop of visitors’ conversations.

Performance at the birthday celebration

Gunn’s wife, Jenn Holland, tracked down Johnston in Seattle and brought her together with percussionist Joe Mangis to perform at the celebration. Before that, Rhett Miller of the band Old 97’s also played for the guests.

During the performance of For Now, Gunn and Holland cried, and after the song ended, those present gave the performer a standing ovation — one of three that evening. The director created a Spotify playlist of Nouela’s songs and wrote that the greatness of art is determined not by the number of people familiar with it, but by the depth of its impact on an individual person.
