Director Jon Watts may helm Star Wars Episode X — Rolling Stone

Director Jon Watts, known for his work on three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland, may direct the tenth episode of the Star Wars saga. As Rolling Stone reports, citing Variety, Watts may lead work on the first film of the planned new Skywalker Saga trilogy.

Watts is also the co-creator of the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew. At the same time, Star Wars has not yet officially confirmed that the director will work on Episode X.

In 2024, Star Wars producers said that Simon Kinberg, the screenwriter of several films in the X-Men series, was to write the screenplays for the planned trilogy. Few details are known about it. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rey, the character played by Daisy Ridley, may play a central role in the new story.

Upcoming films in the franchise

The original Star Wars trilogy consisted of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It was followed by the prequel trilogy and later by the sequel trilogy: The Force Awakens in 2015, The Last Jedi in 2017 and The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

After The Rise of Skywalker, the release of feature-length films in the franchise slowed down. The Mandalorian & Grogu, released this summer, became the first Star Wars film since 2019. A standalone film, Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, is also due to be released in May 2027, with its premiere scheduled for the 50th anniversary of A New Hope.
