Maayan exhibition to be shown in Jerusalem — Jerusalem Post
A solo exhibition by artist Maayan, What Lies Beneath, featuring 28 of her works, will open in Jerusalem, Israel, on September 8. The exhibition will run until October 21 on the third floor of the Hechal Shlomo Jewish Art Museum, next to the Great Synagogue. Admission to the exhibition will be free, the Jerusalem Post reports.
A journey from New York to Jerusalem
Maayan, whose name translates from Hebrew as “spring,” was born in the state of New Jersey. She began studying art at the age of eight and later honed her skills in New York at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design. The artist also studied graphic design and advertising at the School of Visual Arts, where fine art was her minor.
For a time, Maayan worked as a creative director in advertising and taught at the Montclair Art Museum. Eventually, she left her permanent job in advertising to focus on painting and gradually move toward Orthodox observance of Jewish traditions. Two grants from the Art Students League enabled her to work in Italy, France, Spain and Germany, as well as study at the Marchutz School of Art in Aix-en-Provence.

Maayan calls her artistic style “experiential abstraction.” Her works combine academic training with motifs from Jewish sources, including weekly Torah portions, Psalms and the ancient text Perek Shira. In 2012, she moved to Israel with her husband, and the following year she received a special government grant as an artist with unique and exceptional talent.
Works after the fire and a new book
During a fire that destroyed Maayan’s first studio, more than 50 of her oil paintings and numerous sketches were lost. Twenty-six works survived and were exhibited at the Marrache Fine Art Gallery in 2013. After a lengthy break, the artist returned to her work and created the Out of the Dark series of paintings and sculptures from charred fragments of wood, glass and canvases.
Maayan has also published the book Hineni: An Artist’s Journey, in which she tells her own artistic story through texts and painting. The exhibition’s opening ceremony and book presentation are scheduled for September 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Hechal Shlomo Jewish Art Museum.
