Shadow Work thriller about domestic violence released in Japan — The Japan Times

Shadow Work, a thriller by director Ryuhei Yoshino about women who have survived domestic violence and create a mutual support network, has been released in Japan. The Japan Times reports that the film also addresses vigilante justice and revenge against abusers.

The film is an adaptation of a novel by Hiromi Sano, published in 2022. At the beginning of the film, viewers are told that one in four Japanese women has experienced domestic violence from a partner or husband. The creators imagine how survivors might not only support one another but also administer justice to their abusers.

A shelter for survivors

The protagonist Noriko, played by Riho Yoshioka, ends up in hospital after a conflict with her husband, who abuses her. A nurse introduces her to a private shelter in the countryside. It is run by Akie, played by Jun Fubuki.

At the shelter, women can stay without any time limit, but they must follow strict rules. Among them is the principle of “one enters, one leaves,” which sets certain conditions for residents.

A police detective investigates a woman’s death

At the same time, detective Kaoru, played by Nao, investigates the death of a young woman whose body washed ashore in the area where she works. Her colleagues believe it was a suicide, but Kaoru disagrees with that conclusion and continues searching for the circumstances of the death.

Kaoru is also in an abusive relationship. Her husband Shinichi, played by Takumi Kitamura, serves in the police. After learning that the deceased woman had lived with a cohabiting partner who used violence, the detective takes up the case even more actively. The investigation eventually leads her to the women’s shelter, where she finds herself on the opposite side from people who, under different circumstances, could have been her allies.

Shadow Work runs for 129 minutes. The film is in Japanese.
