Matthew Rhys sets Emmy record in the US with two acting wins
Welsh actor Matthew Rhys became the first performer to win two awards in leading acting categories in one evening at the Emmy Awards ceremony in the United States. As BBC News reports, he was honored for his roles in the comedy series Widow's Bay and the psychological thriller The Beast In Me.
Rhys received the award for outstanding lead actor in a limited series for The Beast In Me, and later won in the outstanding lead actor in a comedy series category for Widow's Bay. After receiving his second award, he dedicated it to the “wonderful people of Wales” and gave thanks in Welsh.
Rhys's historic win
Previously, several actors, including Alan Alda, Sally Field, John Goodman, Elisabeth Moss and Ted Danson, had been nominated in two leading acting categories in the same year. However, Rhys became the first to win in both categories.
In The Beast In Me, Claire Danes plays a writer experiencing grief who becomes obsessively interested in a new neighbor suspected of murder. In Widow's Bay, Rhys plays a mayor; the series tells the story of a fictional island whose residents suffer from a curse that has lasted for centuries.

Rhys's Widow's Bay co-star Kate O'Flynn also became one of the British winners. She received an Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for playing Patricia.
Other winners
Jean Smart won in the outstanding actress in a comedy series category for the fifth and final season of Hacks. It is her fifth Emmy for the series and her eighth acting award overall. Allison Janney won the eighth Emmy of her career for a supporting role in the drama series The Diplomat. Both actresses tied Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the number of acting awards.
The Pitt was named best drama series, while Noah Wyle received the award for outstanding lead actor in a drama for the second consecutive year. Rhea Seehorn won the first Emmy of her career for lead actress in the drama series Pluribus.
Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his campaign supporting people with Parkinson's disease. The ceremony also honored the memory of Dolly Parton, Catherine O'Hara, and actor and director Rob Reiner. Stephen Colbert won in the best variety series category after the final episode of The Late Show aired in May.
