Eman Al Hashemi exhibition on urban memory opens in Abu Dhabi — The National

The Horizon We Inherit, an exhibition by Emirati artist Eman Al Hashemi, has opened at the Iris Projects gallery in MiZa, Abu Dhabi, UAE. The exhibition brings together ceramics, printmaking and mixed-media works, exploring urban life, memory and symbols that recur across different cultures, The National reports.

Solar symbols and urban space

The starting point for Al Hashemi’s project was a sun symbol she saw in Fujairah. The artist later began researching similar images in other cultures. During a summer trip to Kyrgyzstan, she noticed a solar sign resembling the motifs she had already been developing in her own work.

The exhibition repeatedly features images of the sun, streetlights, buildings and roundabouts. They appear in sculptural forms that resemble familiar objects but do not have a single unambiguous interpretation. The works also examine how infrastructure, movement and the redevelopment of the urban environment affect memories of places that are changing or disappearing.

Colour and the form of the vessel

Al Hashemi describes herself as a collector of stories and uses observations of everyday life to create new works. Her previous projects focused on spoons, mass production and vessels made together with other people to explore connection.

In the new exhibition, the image of the vessel is combined with solar motifs and architectural forms. The artist views a building as a kind of vessel capable of holding light, communication or what people seek to pass on for a long time.

For this series, Al Hashemi also used a brighter palette, which she had previously mainly used in small drawings. The exhibition will run until November 26.
