Exhibition “Girls’ Island” opens at the Estonian Academy of Arts
The Estonian Academy of Arts has opened the exhibition-narrative project “Tüdrukute saar” (“Girls’ Island”). It imagines an island where girls live among flowers and nature. The exhibition will run until September 6 at the academy’s gallery at Põhja pst 7.
A space of imagination without war
The project grew out of the wartime experience of Ukrainian artist Daria Titova and addresses the themes of childhood, grief, home, and the need to create spaces where imagination can become a refuge, ERR News reports.
According to the authors, the word “girls” in the island’s title does not imply a gender restriction. It is a symbol of openness, curiosity, and sincerity, and of the belief that the world can be different and that space can be open to everyone.

Works by project participants
There is no war or grief in the world of the exhibition. Flowers and plants serve as symbols of resistance, while tenderness, imagination, and care are ways of survival and of creating another reality, the project’s authors said.
The exhibition includes original visual works by Daria Titova, ceramics by Maria Chudna, and original music by Helena Atkin. Natalia Stoikova and Kornelia Nemtsova also present the film “Naise sõda” (“A Woman’s War”), which adds a new perspective on women’s experiences during conflict.
