Italy extends diesel excise tax cut and plans to increase production

As ANSA English reports, the previous period of the reduced excise tax was due to end at midnight. The measure was introduced to mitigate the consequences of the war in Iran, which contributed to rising fuel prices.
Government critics said that the excise tax cut should also be extended to petrol. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a video address after the government meeting that the relief had been extended to control the cost of petrol and diesel until new measures emerge next week.

Accelerating oil and gas production
The decree also provides for steps to accelerate oil and gas production in Italy in order to reduce dependence on imported energy resources. According to Meloni, the state will be able to appoint commissioners who will help regions issue permits and concessions more quickly for the search, exploration and extraction of hydrocarbons.
Meloni said the government seeks to increase domestic oil and gas production, as Italy can extract these resources on its territory. She also stressed the need to reduce bureaucratic procedures to speed up the processing of concessions.
