Ghana’s NPA expects steady Sentuo production through December — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) expects Sentuo Oil Refinery to produce fuel steadily through December 2026. The plant is expected to become an important source of domestic supply alongside imports, MyJoyOnline reports.
NPA expectations
NPA Chief Executive Godwin Kudzo Tameklo said in an interview with JoyNews on September 18 that the regulator is confident in stable production at Sentuo from now until the end of the year.
His statement came amid increased attention to the role of local oil-refining enterprises in strengthening Ghana’s fuel supply and reducing the country’s dependence on imported petroleum products.

Patrick Kwaku Ofori, Chief Executive of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), also emphasized the importance of Sentuo and Tema Oil Refinery operating. In his assessment, the two refineries could potentially cover between 25% and 30% of Ghana’s total fuel consumption, with imports supplying the remainder.
Impact on prices
Ofori called for increasing refining capacity and improving refinery efficiency so that a larger share of the country’s petroleum product needs can be met within Ghana. At the same time, he cautioned that increased domestic refining would not automatically mean lower fuel prices at filling stations.
According to the CBOD chief, refineries purchase crude oil at prices linked to international quotations. He also criticized a subsidy of 2 Ghanaian cedis per litre of fuel, noting that it may not provide equal benefits to all consumers. Instead, Ofori advocated investment in public transport and a long-term energy strategy.
