Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi discusses energy security with IEA chief

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi discussed energy security in Tokyo with Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing a statement by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

POWERR GX initiative

Takaichi said that Japan seeks to promote efforts under the POWERR GX initiative worldwide. According to her, this should strengthen the resilience of the global energy supply and demand structure.

The POWERR GX program is aimed at strengthening the resilience of Japan’s energy supply and energy consumption system. It provides for enhancing the stability of fossil fuel supplies, as well as accelerating and implementing the so-called “green transformation.”

Cooperation with the IEA

Japan’s prime minister reiterated Tokyo’s call on the international community to develop three areas of global energy security: ensuring free and transparent energy trade, strengthening international coordination on oil stockpiling, and enhancing interaction between producer and consumer countries.

The sides also discussed diversifying energy supply sources and strengthening the resilience of critical mineral supply chains. Japan and the IEA agreed to work closely amid the challenging global energy situation.

Separately, the IEA director met with Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi. They exchanged views on strengthening the presence of Japanese specialists at the IEA and the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, and also confirmed their intention to continue close cooperation.
